Currently the state of Mississippi is voting on an amendment that would declare a fertilized egg a person. No, I’m not kidding – this amendment would define personhood as “every human being from the moment of fertilization, cloning or the functional equivalent thereof.”

They want to call a fertilized egg a person? WTF? This is a nothing more than a reckless attack on women’s reproductive rights. Full disclosure, I am pro-choice, but come on! A fertilized egg, a person????!!!. OK Mississippians, before you vote on this, ask yourself this question. You walk into a burning building and you see a 6 year old child and a container clearly marked Human Fertilized eggs. You can only save one. Would you hesitate before saving the ACTUAL child? Think on that at the voting booths.

iOS Wednesday #2 Constitution

In case you hadn’t noticed my earlier rant, I’m more than a little disappointed with President Obama’s move to at least temporarily halt the court ruling that would wold have essentially repealed ‘Don’t ask Don Tell’. So I thought it fitting that for today’s iOS Wednesday I would highlight an App called (drumroll please) Constitution. This is a free add supported app. One of my favorite features is the section that reads “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” – as shown in the second picture. Ok enough ranting… If you are looking to keep a copy of the Constitution in your pocket, complete with the preamble, Articles and Amendments, not to mention some fascinating notes, it is an interesting and free app.

Obama requests emergency stay of ‘don’t ask, don’t tell‘

OK I get it Obama, regardless of the Teabagger propaganda and fear mongering, you are are a moderate politician. You want change, you know we need change, but you want it at a slow an steady pace. And for somethings that makes sense. But please explain to me how “don’t ask don’t tell” protects this nation’s security. You taught constitutional law. You know that it is blatantly discriminatory and an unreasonable infringement upon freedom speech. You know better. Do you really have so little faith in our brave men and women, serving this nation, who are protecting these fundamental rights for which you seek to deny them. Do you really believe that this will somehow cause our soldiers to loose the capacity to serve with honor and bravery. Or is this just political pandering to the “right”. Either way, you have done a disservice to soldiers fighting to protect this nation as well as to the nation as a whole.

Commenting Policy

I don’t have a formal commenting policy, not that I have tons of commenters or anything. But I have never “not approved” a message that was obviously spam free. Today I received a comment on my McCain post that I still have sitting in moderation. The commenter basically stated that McCain and Palin are way ahead of Obama in the polls, called Obama an idiot and stated that he would “go the way of Jesse Jackson and leech money from the African American Population.” Clearly I don’t agree but the reason I haven’t approved it was because he/she wrote it claiming to be Barack Obama. Had it been written in third person, as much as I disagree, I would have approved it. It’s a personal pet peeve of mine; you want to post something anonymously, that fine, just don’t pretend to be someone you are not. I am curious what other bloggers do. What do you moderate? What are your comment pet peeves?

Would someone please tell me what the hell McCain is smoking? If you need any more proof that the good Senator is out touch with the majority of the American population and you know reality, watch this video and pick up a copy any major newspaper and take a gander at the massive economic fall out before us. Unless you are living with your head in the sand or on some sort of mind altering substance, you might just come across little hints the economy is in serious shit – You know things like the Sub prime crisis, massive increase in home foreclosures, not to mention the increasing number Bank failures for starts. How many of our aging baby boomers have portfolios with so called long term “safe” investments built on a foundation of security that is Fanny Mae, Freddie Mac, and the Lehman Brothers. How many people woke up this week to the realization that they would no longer be able to retire?

For those of you who have had or have been a child in the last 60 years, you may be familiar with Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown. While on a hunt for our latest book club read we happened across Goodnight Bush: A Parody By Gan Golan (Author), Erich Origen (Author), an absolutely hilarious parody of Goodnight Moon framing the stupidity of the Bush Administration. Melissa vetoed the purchase, but I could not stop laughing so I will definitely be picking myself up a copy in the not to distant future.

Yeah GINA – Wahoo Congress!

The GINA is almost law. The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) has cleared congress after 13 years of debate. In one of the only positive moves to come out of this Administration/ Near Hollywood style parody of unfathomable incompetence, President George (too stupid for Words) Bush is expected to sign it into law. Why is this a good thing? Because knowledge is power and power is to often abused. A few years ago I sat with my wife at a conference on Crohn’s & Colitis, one of the speakers was urging suffers to participate in genetic testing. I urged her to wait. While I know I was doing a disservice to other with this disease, there is a very real danger with allowing the wrong people to get a hold of the code, that in-part, makes us who we are. I am strong believer in the progress of science, but the fear that she or our children*could be discriminated against based on this Mitzvah** could – well, as they say, no good deed goes unpunished. GINA, once it becomes law will help allay those concerns. GINA has the opportunity to help shape the future of humanity, create a world were we can reap the rewards medical progress without the fear of personal reprisal for the gift of sharing our fundamental nature. This may yet prove to be the one positive legacy that Bush leaves to humanity.
