Alex Kagan Novelette, not so much a novelette anymore

I posted yesterday  I planned on doing a prequel to the Alex Kagan series with a novelette about how her grandfather escaped Nazi Germany and ended up falling into the world of Practical Kabbalah.  But I realized it is not possible to due her grandfather justice as a novelette. I am going to have to make this at least a Novella.  I know not everyone knows the differences but here is the standard word count breakdown in fiction.

A Short Story, under 7,500 words.

A Novelette, between 7,500 and 17,500 words

A Novella, between 17,500 and 40,000 words

A Novel, over 40,000 words.

As I started plotting and thinking about the various ways I was going to tie this into The Sexton and the Reaper and my work in progress TBD an Alex Kagan Novel. I just knew I couldn’t tell this man’s story in under 17,500 words. So novella it will be. I’m not sure how it ends yet, but I know it starts when he is 10 and stuck in Nazi Germany and continues well into his adulthood. His story just doesn’t want to be told in short form. I doubt I will make it into a full length novel because I am too eager to finish Alex Kagan Book 1. But I hope to have it filled out enough to satisfy most readers.

But I still have a problem. Other than his last name Kagan, I have no idea what his first name is. As I mentioned in my last post I’m looking for a good German or Eastern European Jewish first name for her grandfather. Give me your best shot. Winner gets a free copy of The Sexton and The Reaper or My children’s book Egret the Elephant. Winner’s choice! The contest is on Facebook, but it’s a public post, so you don’t have to be “friends” with me to participate. Here is the link. https://www.facebook.com/coreyjf/posts/10200259348020765. New novelette in the works and a contest!

OK I have left http://www.coreyjf.com/2013/03/on-friendships-a-real-post-unrelated-to-marking-my-books/ and its various updates, as the top post way too long. Time for something new.

As some of you may know I am in the process of writing a novel about a Detective named Alex Kagan who ends up falling into the mystical and magical world of practical Kabbalah while personally investigating her grandfather’s death.  So I have had this idea floating around my head for another novelette. This one is about how Alex Kagan‘s grandfather escapes Nazi Germany and eventually ends up falling into the world of Practical Kabbalah himself. It’s not really a spoiler that her Grandfather is involved in practical kabbalah since, as I said, it is investigating his death at the beginning of the book that brings Alex into it. And it could help me flesh out that character a little more, and in a way, his relationship with Alex… Plus I’ll get to play around with the magic system, also helping me flesh out the book more. I had been debating if I should write it after I finished the first Alex Kagan novel or before. I decided it is better to write it now, especially when the ideas are fresh and it will help me build on the actual novel. I have mentioned that my other novelette The Sexton and the Reaper will also tie into the Alex Kagan series. But this novelette, besides the direct tie in to Alex Kagan, it will also tie into The Sexton and the Reaper, at least in a small way. What can I say, I have fun dropping Easter eggs into my work.

But here is my problem. So far my work on the actual full novel, I have been referring to her grandfather by either Zayde (A term of grandfather) or XGFX Kagan. I have been totally stuck on his name. I’m looking for a good German or Eastern European Jewish first name for her grandfather. Good Luck!

Mailing list for new book releases

I have decided to start a mailing list for story and book releases. I am not sure when my current Work in Progress (WiP) will be out. But I am trying to finalize a deal with the illustrator of Egret Volume 1. I have four more volumes ready to go and it is just a matter of getting them edited and illustrated. I also just released a novelette which will tie into my Alex Kagan series (WiP). I have a few more ideas for tie-ins. So I am hopeful I will have a lot out over the next year or so. I would prefer not to repeat the angry ex-girlfriend mistake of emailing my entire address book as I did with the Sexton and the Reaper. Hence the mailing list idea. This list is mainly for release announcements though I may send out a giveaway notice as well. If you want to support my writing I would be most appreciative if you singed up at the link below.
